Judo is a Japanese martial art and sport developed by Jigoro Kano at the beginning of the 20th century. The term "judo" translates as "the gentle way" or "the way of overcoming".

The main idea of judo is to use an opponent’s strength and energy to move and control them. Compared with other martial arts, judo places greater emphasis on throws and groundwork.

Judo is an Olympic sport, and its popularity has spread around the world.

Colored belts and ranks

Judo has a system of colored belts that indicates athletes’ skill and experience level. Ukraine also uses a system of sports ranks.

Ranks are divided into kyu for beginners and dan grades for experienced athletes.

  • 6th kyu - white belt. Entry level for beginners.
  • 5th kyu - yellow belt. First knowledge of judo techniques.
  • 4th kyu - orange belt. Further athlete development.
  • 3rd kyu - green belt. A high level of technical proficiency.
  • 2nd kyu - blue belt. Significant experience and a high level of technique execution.
  • 1st kyu - brown belt. A high level of mastery.

Black belt

After colored belts, judoka move on to the black belt, which is divided into dan grades.

Receiving a new kyu or dan requires special tests and compliance with the requirements of the sports organization.

  • 1st dan - black belt, a high degree of mastery.
  • 2nd dan
  • 3rd dan
  • And so on up to 10th dan, which is the highest level.

How to get a colored judo belt?

To receive a judo belt, you should go through several stages:

  • Club registration:It usually starts with joining a local judo club, where the athlete receives instruction from a coach.
  • Initial training:The first stage is learning the basics of judo, including falls, blocks and basic techniques.
  • Participation in training and tournaments:Practice helps improve technique and gain experience in real bouts.
  • Exams and tests:Participants pass technical tests where their skills and level of preparation are assessed.
  • Rank advancement:Based on exam results, the athlete may be awarded a new belt.
  • Personal development:Judo is a path of constant improvement, competition and growth in mastery.

Each judo organization may have its own belt-awarding procedure, so it is important to follow the internal rules and requirements of the "Kodokan" club.
